Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity are plaguing our nations’ children more than ever before, and for the first time in this country’s history, children have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. The National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils (NFGFC) has set out to ensure our children grow up healthy, active and fit by by putting fitness centers in schools and, thereby, giving schools the tools they need to succeed!
By the end of 2012, the NFGFC had dedicated 11 Live PositivelyFitness Centers to schools in California, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. In 2013, the NFGFC will donate another 15 centers to schools across the country. Facilities are designed to meet the unique needs of the school and include strength training equipment, cardio fitness machines and interactive exercise games.
Schools will be awarded facilities based on their use of innovative methods to support physical activity and good nutrition. Schools must submit a nomination to receive a fitness center, and winners are selected by the NFGFC Evaluation Committee—a panel of experts from sports, medicine and business.
Live Positively Fitness Centers are made possible through financial support from The Coca-Cola Company and in-kind support from TuffStuff Fitness Equipment.
