Frequently Asked Questions

Why was the National Foundation of Governors’ Fitness Councils formed?
The NFGFC was formed as a way to provide our nation’s children with the tools they need to grow up healthy and strong. Studies show that regular physical activity during childhood and adolescence helps prevent and treat more than 40 chronic diseases, enhances an individual’s health and quality of life and reduces national health care costs. By installing fitness centers in schools, the NFGFC believes it can help improve students’ academic performance, boost students’ confidence and self-esteem, reduce discipline problems and absenteeism, and establish patterns for healthy interpersonal relationships.

How are schools nominated?
Schools can be self-nominated or nominated by outside parties to apply for the award. The process is simple. First, make sure your school meets the general criteria and physical requirements listed on the “Nominate a School” page.  Second, download the nomination form for your state and answer all of the questions given.  Completed nomination forms can be submitted via email or through regular mail.

What does it mean to be named a National Champion School?
If your school is selected as a National Champion School, then the NFGFC has found it to demonstrate an exemplary commitment to the physical fitness and wellness of its students and to employ innovative, best practices in its fitness programs. A National Champion School is recognized and supported for its outstanding efforts by being awarded a state-of-the-art Live PositivelyFitness Center.

How are winning schools selected? Who is on the selection committee?
Nominations are reviewed by the NFGFC Evaluation Committee—a panel of leading experts in the fields of sport, physical education, medical science and business. Each school is assessed and scored on select criteria that are consistent with our values and mission as a foundation. These scores are then weighted based on each criterion’s level of importance and added together for a final score.

Do the schools that win a fitness center receive instructions on best practices to ensure the center is used safely and to its fullest ability?
Yes! Once the fitness center has been installed in the school, a TuffStuff expert will train your staff and a select group of students on the equipment.

What is a Live Positively Fitness Center? What kind of equipment does it include?
The Live Positively Fitness Center is comprised of a full line of state-of-the-art equipment provided by NFGFC partner, TuffStuff Fitness Equipment. The fitness center will include strength training equipment, cardio fitness equipment and interactive exercise games designed to fit the unique needs of each National Champion School. The award includes the design, delivery and installation of the equipment within the school’s existing building structure.

When is the National Foundation coming to my state? How are states selected?
In 2012, the NFGFC awarded 11 Live Positively Fitness Centers to schools in California, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. This year, the NFGFC plans to award fitness centers to 15 more schools in 5 new states.  The NFGFC is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated school officials, state departments and governors across the country interested in finding solutions to childhood obesity and taking action now.

Where does the NFGFC get its funding?
The Coca-Cola Company is the proud primary sponsor of the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils. Coca-Cola is guided by a philosophy it calls “Live Positively” and is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of its consumers and in the communities where they live, work and play. Part of making a positive difference is helping to support and promote physical activity and nutrition education initiatives in local communities to help Americans enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle. The NFGFC also works closely with its administrative partner, the American College of Sports Medicine, and its equipment provider, TuffStuff Fitness Equipment.
