The National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils aims to improve youth fitness by recognizing schools that actively promote physical activity and wellness to students. The NFGFC is selecting schools in participating states to receive a state-of-the-art fitness center.
Funding priority will be given to applicants determined to have a significant low-income population demonstrated by a high percentage of participation in free and reduced-price meal programs.
When available, funding priority will be given to applicants determined to have a significant proportion of students considered to be overweight or obese identified by high body mass index (BMI) measurements when compared to the state average.
Funding priority will be given to applicants that demonstrate a robust plan for using the equipment provided by the grant in growing and improving their physical education and academic programs.
The elementary or middle school is a public or public charter school.
The majority of students are between the ages of 8 and 13 years.
The school must have instructional physical education for all students in every grade and have an existing gymnasium or designated facility for physical education. This designated facility must meet the requirements set forth in the Physical Requirements and Conditions Form.
A donation of fitness equipment worth approximately $100,000 will be granted to three qualifying schools in each state. The award is comprised of strength training equipment, cardio fitness equipment and interactive exercise games; and includes the design, delivery and installation of the equipment within the school’s existing building structure.
